Sewickley Area Libraries assist the Sewickley Public Library in hosting the annual Battle of the Books. This literary competition is for students in grades 4 to 12. Students form teams and read a selection of books. In the spring, the teams come together to answer questions related to the novels.
Off-Beat: A Youth Art and Poetry Expo - April 22 at Sewickley Library
Two local literary magazines collaborated to celebrate National Poetry Month in April. Bittersweet, from Quaker Valley High School, and Ephemera, from Sewickley Academy Senior School, presented Off-Beat, a youth art and poetry expo, on Friday, April 22 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Sewickley Public Library.
Amongst displays of student artwork, students had the opportunity to share their written word and music with peers. Cookies and coffee created a cafe like atmosphere and students enjoyed other planned activities such as creating “found poems” made from already famous lines of poetry, adding to a continuous, collective poem, and wrapping up the night by participating in a few quick rounds of an improv game.
The night was a great success, highlighting the value of collaboration between Sewickley Academy, Quaker Valley, and the area library programs as well as the exceptional talent of our students. Student leadership from both schools intend on making the event even bigger and better next year!
This year's battles will take place:
